Museum of Welsh Life Cardiff St Fagins Melin Lifio Ty n Rhos sawmill During the second half of the nineteenth century Manual saw pits were being replaced by water or steam powered circular and reciprocating saws This mill from Llanddewi Brefi in Cardiganshire typifies this change Established in 1868 by John Williams later joined by his sons Thomas and William This building was erected in 1892 to house a new circular saw driven by a 10ft diameter cast iron waterwheel purchased for 15 00 A system of shafts pulleys and belts also drove other machines such as a planer band saw In the thirties the water wheel was replaced by a Model T Ford engine and then during WW11 by a Morris Cowley Engine
