An old engraving of a steam powered lawn-mower. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The lawn mower was invented by Englishman Edwin Beard Budding in 1830. His hand-mower was for cutting grass on sports grounds. As an alternative to the scythe, it could cut closer to the ground. Horses were used to pull larger mowers a decade later and steam-powered lawnmowers were introduced in the 1890s, but were heavy and bulky machines. It seems this earlier illustration of a small steam-powered mower is probably an artist’s impression rather than a machine that was manufactured

An old engraving of a steam powered lawn-mower. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The lawn mower was invented by Edwin Beard Budding in 1830 near Stroud, Gloucestershire, England, UK. Budding's hand-mower was designed primarily to cut the grass on sports grounds and large gardens, as a superior alternative to the scythe, it could also cut grass closer to the ground. It was granted a British patent in 1830. Horses were used to pull larger mowers a decade later and steam-powered lawnmowers were introduced in the 1890s, but were quite heavy and bulky machines. It seems therefore that this earlier illustration of a small steam-powered mower is very likely to be a fanciful artist’s impression rather than a machine that was manufactured. It took longer to heat steam in the boiler than to mow lawns so petrol powered mowers were to become far more popular.
