Causes of a Respiration. Inspiration is caused by theenlarging of the chest, as described above. Expirationis caused by the elastic tissue contracting to its naturalcondition, thus forcing the air out. 132 A HEALTHY BODY. Voluntary or Involuntary? Breathing is partly underthe control of the will, and partly not. We breathewhen we are not thinking of it, and we can for a timebreathe either more slowly or faster than usual. Ordi-nary breathing, however, is inyoluntary. Sounds of the Chest. When the air rushes in and outof the lungs, it makes peculiar sounds. By listeningto these sounds the physician is able to tell whether thelungs are healthy or not
