WOOD DISTILLATION RETORT—A CHARGE BEING PUT INTO THE RETORTPREPARATORY TO DESTRUCTIVE DISTILLATION A Decennial Recoki) 57 base for tlit- iiiaiuifactiire of nitrocellulose, one of the most importanthigh explosives. In spite of the fact that special machinery for cut-ting the linters from the cotton seeds had been installed at most cot-ton seed crushing plants, the demand grew much faster than thesupply. Finally, the laboratory undertook to find ways and meansfor producing suitable cellulose from wood. Several grades of woodpulp were given a series of after-treatments to remove the impurities, and the treated samples sent to an arsenal for nitration. It was foimdthat at least two of the after-treatments produced entirely satisfactorymaterial, and plans for the daily j^roduction of several hundred tonsof this pulp had been made when the cessation of hostilities ended theimmediate need for such tremendous quantities of high explosives.
