In 1886 he again resigned this position toaccept the principalship of the State Normal Schoolat Ypsilanti. He remained there until 1894, whenhe was appointed United States Minister to resigned this office in 1897 and returned toDetroit. He was thoroughly identified with theteachers profession in Michigan. He was an earn-est worker in the State Teachers Association, andwas its president in i86r. In 1876 he was elected. JOHN MAHELM BERRY SILL President of the Detroit Scientific Association. Onthe death of Regent Knight, in 1867, Mr. Sill wasappointed to tlie vacancy and served out the term,retiring January i, 1S70. At the following Com-mencement, the Regents conferred upon him thehonorary degree of Master of Arts. He was marriedMarch 22, 1854, to Sally Beaumont, of children survive : Alice Beaumont and Joseph( 1897, 1899). He died in DetroitMichigan, April 6, 1901. HIRAM AUSTIN BURT was born in thetownship of Avon, Oakland County, Michigan,December 31, 1839, son of John and Julia Ann(Calkins) Burt. He is of mixed ancestry, English,Scotch, Dutch, and Irish. His paternal ancestor, 192 UNIJERSirr OF MICHIGAN Richard Burt, came from England and settled atTaunton, Massachusetts, about the middle of theseventeenth century. The seventh in line from thisRichard, William Austin Burt, grandfather of HiramAustin, came to Michigan as early as 1817
