Launch of a Long March 2C (LM-2C or CZ-2C) rocket from the Jiuquan Space Centre, China, on 19 August 1983. The brown streak on the side of the rocket is dinitrogen tetroxide, used as an oxidiser in both of the rocket's stages. The payload on this flight was a FSW-1 photographic imaging satellite. This, with its film cannisters, was recovered after re-entry five days later. Although officially described as an Earth observation satellite, it is thought that the FSW-1 was used for reconnaissance purposes. Later FSW-1 flights included microgravity experiments for commercial customers.
