This image is centred on the North Pole and shows the varying depths of the Arctic Ocean, increasing from red through yellow, orange, green and blue to purple. The land is seen as grey. This map was constructed using a geographic information system (GIS) that captured, stored and analysed the Arctic region's bathymetric data. Bathymetric information is usually gathered by using an echosounder (sonar), where surveying boats emit a beam of sound downwards into the ocean. The sonar equipment then records how long it takes until the sound bounces off the sea floor and returns to the boat. This project is the International Bathymetric Chart of the Arctic Ocean (IBCAO) and commenced in 1997.
