Tulip varieties, Paule Sano and Afrique, Tulipa gesneriana, with butterfly and beetle. Handcoloured copperplate botanical engraving from "Nederlandsch Bloemwerk" (Dutch Flower Arrangements), Amsterdam, Elwe, 1794. The artist of the fine plates is a mystery: the title bouquet has the signature of Paul Theodor van Brussel (1754-1795), the Dutch flower painter, and one auricula is "drawn from life" by A. Bres. According to Hunt, 30 plates show the influence of the famous French artist Nicolas Robert (1614-1685).
