When fourteenyears of age he hired out as a farm hand, and con-tinued in that avocation the greater part of histime until he was sixteen years of age, when heenlisted in Company C, One Hundred and Sixty-fourth Ohio Infantry, and served until the close ofthe war. On being mustered in, the regiment wassent to Washington and was actively engaged inthe various campaigns in and around that cityuntil the surrender of Lee.
