The Table book; . to a party of sportsmenwho visited him in the country, and werecomplaining of a perfect famine of wad-ding. * a gDtincj: ^rti^tss 3lttter FROM SW^ITZERLAND. From the letter of an English artist, nowabroad, accompanied by marginal sketcheswith the pen, addressed to a young relation,[ am obligingly permitted to take the fol-lowing— EXTRACT, InterJaken, , Sept. 10, 1826. 1 arrived at Geneva, after a ride of a dayand a iiight, from Lyons, through a delight-ful mountainous country. The steam-boatcarried me from Geneva to Lausanne, avery pretty town, at the other end of thefine lake, from whence I went to Berne, one of the principal towns in Switzerland, and the most beautiful I have seen yet. Itjs extremely clean, and therefore it wasquite a treat, after the French towns, whichare filthy. Berne is convenient resid%nce, both insunny and wet weather, for all the streetshave arcades, under which the shops are itithis way, • The Xiires. 26th March, {rom an Edinburgh so that people are not obliged to walk ii;the middle of the street at all. The townis protected by strong fortifications, but theramparts are changed into charming walks. There are also delightful ter-races on The river side, commanding thesurrounding country, which is enchanting—rich woods and fertile valleys, swellingmountains, and meadows like velvet; and, beyond all, the snowy Alps, At Berne I equipped myself as mosipt^rsons do who travel on foot throughSwitzerland ; I have seen scores of younomen all in the same pedestrian costume. Jgive you a sketch, that you may have sbetter idea of it.
