One of the main alleys of Plaka village around the "blue" hour. Plaka is the capital of Milos island, Cyclades, Greece

Plaka is the "capital" of Milos, the most beautiful village of the island, a real "Hora" of the Cyclades. Although it's located quite far from the sea, on the top of a hill, it has been for the last centuries the "base" of the Milian mariners. The seamen of Milos were considered the best "pilotoi" (=navigators) of the Mediterranean, and were payed very well to offer their services. The could take any ship, anywhere in the Mediterranean with excellent precision, in a time when the Radars and the GPS, were not even science fiction. So they chose to live much higher than sea level, so they could easily spot passing ships. The other reason they chose to live far from the sea, was to avoid pirates' attacks.
