Fish fossil. Rock containing a fossil of a Dapalis macrurus fish. Fossils appear as rock slowly forms around objects buried in mud. As the rock forms, the shape and anatomy of buried animals and plants can be preserved. This specimen dates from the Oligocene epoch (between 33 and 23 million years ago) and was found in France.
