Redevelopment in Birmingham, West Midlands, England, UK in 1970 – here the cranes are present at Holiday Street (left). The city was undergoing rapid changes in this era with major roadworks in Suffolk Street (to become Suffolk Street Queensway, running centre right to left in this view). The older buildings (centre) are no longer standing. To the left, the building under construction has been redeveloped once more to become part of the Paradise Birmingham/Chamberlain Square complex. Suffolk Street’s Trafalgar House (right) is a distinctive glass and stone-faced shop and office block built in the early 1960s. The artist Bianca Rossoff created a large fibreglass sculpture on the side of the building. The offices were once occupied by the Public Health Department. The BT Tower (formerly the Post Office Tower and the GPO Tower, centre left) is a landmark telecommunications tower and is the tallest structure in the city. The area on the left was recently developed once more and forms Crowne Plaza. This image was taken from where Centenary Plaza now stands by an amateur photographer on 35mm Kodak colour transparency film. It will look soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1970s photograph.
