We must therefore consider it as among the possi-bilities with regard to a spindle-celled sarcomatous tumour that itmay produce all the phenomena of malignancy; though statisticswould show that this event is by no means so likely to happen asin the case of true cancer.* Bound-celled Sarcoma ; Medullary Sarcoma ; Emhryoplastic Tumour,—These tumours have been in many cases described as medullaryor encephaloid cancer, which form they often resemble both intheir external appearance and in their history. The size is generallycomparable with that of lymph cells, but may be larger. Thecells are separated by more or less intercellular substance, thoughthe amount of this may be trifling. In external appearance, theyvary very much as to size and form. On section they appear whenfresh for the most part slightly translucent, but soon becomeopaque, or as it is said medullary; and this medullary appear- * It has often been noticed that lymphatic glands are spared by sarcoma, and thatmetastasis or infection takes place independently of these, but this must not be takenas an absolute rule. 170 YAKIETIES OF SARCOMA. ance may prevail even from tlie first.
