Of the four children born to James and Rox-anna Spence, our subject and his sister Catherine(who is the wife of Philip Braden) are the onlysurvivors. Mr. and Mrs. Braden are residents ofMadison County, 111. John W. Spence attendedschool during his boyhood and youth, when notemployed on his fathers farm. About 1874 heengaged in farming on his own account in his na-tive county, and continued to dwell there for thenext seven years. In 1881 he moved to thiscounty, where he is now well known as a success-ful and practical business man and farmer. February 6, 1873, a marriage ceremony united. PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD. 493 the fortunes of Mr. Spence and Laura Matthews,who was born in Bond County, 111., m is a daughter of Solomon and Abigail Matth-ews, old settlers in the Prairie State. To Mrs. Spence were born eleven children: JohnH., Roxie Abigail, William J., Charles S. (whodied in childhood), James Andrew, Edgar Wil-son, Gentry- Baker, Laura Eveline, Lucinda Eth-el, Irene Adelaide and J. Religiously Mr. and Mrs. Spence are membersof the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Theformer is Trustee of Lodge No. 359, A. O. U. W.,and in politics was a Republican. ^-- ---^ ^HOMAS B. ALBIN.
