Zipernowsky transformer. 19th-century illustration of a transformer design by Hungarian electrical engineer Karoly Zipernowsky (1853-1942). Transformers change the voltage of an electric power supply, enabling it to be used in different devices and within different power networks. Zipernowsky co-invented this step-down transformer in 1885. Later developments by others led to step-up transformers. This illustration is from 'Physique Populaire' (Emile Desbeaux, 1891).
