In cases where the taxpayer suspects his check may have been lost or stolen, Foristall urged the person to get in touch with his local IRS office as soon as possible so that the IRS can put a tracer on the missing check. Some refunds may have been delayed because of errors or omis- sions on tax returns, according to Foristall. Taxpayers affected should follow the instructions received from the IRS in order to speed up issuance of their checks. Foristall stressed that in all refund inquiries to the IRS, the taxpayer should be prepared to provide the name and address as it appeared on the return, the actual name and address if different, the social security numbers, and the type of form filed. While the IRS can remail an undelivered refund check within a few weeks to the new address, Foristall explained that after Octo- ber 1, all undelivered refund checks are cancelled.
