Coldstream Bridge and Marriage House Northumberland England
Seen from the Cornhill or English side. By James Smeaton built 1763 to 1766. After declaratory marriages were made illegal in England in 1754 they were still legal in Scotland until the law was changed in 1856 to require 3 weeks residence. The Toll House on the Scottish side of the bridge was used for such marriages.
