Broken neck. Illustration of a sectioned lateral (side) view of the cervical (neck) region of a human spine with a break in the vertebral column. The front of the spine is at right and the skull is partially seen at top. The break in the vertebral column is at the level between the third and fourth cervical vertebrae (C3-C4). The spinal cord has been severed (transected). This will cause quadriplegia, the paralysis of the legs and arms, leaving the patient with no feeling or movement below the neck. The patient will be unable to breathe and will require the use of a ventilator.
