View of the seafront of Viareggio with the statue of Burlamacco, the symbol and mascot of the famous Carnival, Versilia, Tuscany, Italy

The ancient Carnival of Viareggio originated in 1873 and, in the following century, it evolved into a highly acclaimed spectacle throughout the world. In 1931 it was decided that the city needed a mascot for the carnival: a competition was announced and Uberto Bonetti conceived the winning character, skillfully adopting white and red as the colors for the clown suit that characterized the beach umbrellas of Viareggio. The clown was named Burlamacco in honor of the Burlamacca canal that flows into the sea right in Viareggio. Today the large statue of Burlamacco is displayed permanently on the city's waterfront.
