Cast iron is preferred forheater construction, as that material is less susceptible tocorrosion than sheet iron or steel plate; for the same rea-son, the fittings are of copper or brass. The condensing apparatus consists of two units, eachcapable of taking care of one of the 2000-kw turbines. Thecondensers are of the surface type built for what is known Hoppe. The feed-water heater and purifier is of horizontal cyl-indrical construction, rated to take care of 4000 hp. Asecond heater can be added at any time after a three-waytransfer valve has been installed in the exhaust main topermit cutting off either heater at will or using both to-gether. The steam, enters the heater through an oil sepa-rator, the drips of which are piped to waste. The body ofthe heater is of cast-iron plates reinforced by ribs and bolted as the wet and dry vacuum system. Each unit condenses40,000 lbs. of steam per hour with 70 degs. F. water, main-taining a condenser pressure of 2 ins. absolute, which isequivalent to a 28-in. vacuum based on a 30-in. condensing units consist of the following parts: One6750-sq. ft. surface condense
