Wopmay rock, Mars. Image from the Mars exploration rover Opportunity of a rock dubbed the Wopmay rock, found on the lower slopes of Endurance Crater. Scientists believe that this rock, along with other loose rocks which dot the crater floor, may have been formed as a result of the cracking of larger rocks. This could have happened as they dried out after exposure to water. The lumps on Wopmay may be the result of erosion between intersecting cracks. This would indicate the presence of water on the surface of Mars at some point in its history. Photographed on the 4th October 2004.
