The multicolored specks that surround this full moon on an almost cloudless night were created by a digital camera and are unwanted effects called "noise" in digital photographs. Often these tiny red, green and blue pixels appear in dark areas of a picture when the camera's image sensor is set at a high ISO number to make it more sensitive in low light as with this nighttime exposure. Visual defects in digital images are termed "artifacts" and noise is among them. Noise is created electronically by digital cameras and is analogous to undesirable "grain" in film negatives or transparencies (slides).
