It was near this site in November of 1902 that President Theodore Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear tied to a tree. While there were several versions of the story, President Roosevelt after having an unsuccessful bear hunt found that his guide Holt Collier had tied a bear to a tree for the President to shoot. President Roosevelt refused saying" that shooting a tied bear was Un sportsman like." Apparently, the bear was either old and infirmed or was a cub. After hearing the story as reported by newspaper men traveling with the president someone in the Eastern US produced the first Teddy Bear. And the rest is history.
