Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. (1841-1935), US judge and member of the Supreme Court of the United States. Holmes, who fought in the US Civil War (1861-1865), studied at Harvard University, graduating the year war broke out. After the war he studied law, qualifying in 1866. He was Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court from 1899 to 1902. He was then appointed to the Supreme Court in 1902, serving for over 29 years until he retired in 1932 aged 90. This photograph, from the period 1905 to 1945, is from the Harris and Ewing Collection, which mostly consists of photographs taken in Washington DC, USA.
