Sandy Beach of Lake Usorisan of Mount Osore at Shimokita Peninsula Aomori Prefecture

Mount Osore is a caldera volcano in the centre of the remote Shimokita Peninsula of Aomori Prefecture, Japan. It is considered as one of the most sacred sites in Japan. According to popular mythology, Mount Osore marks the entrance to hell, with a small red bridge across Lake Usorisan representing Sanzu River. The temple presiding over the place is known as Bodaiji. On the temple grounds, one can find offerings made to deceased children. Jizo statues are also found throughout, being protector and guardian of hell and children.
