Haleakala Silversword is a plant native to the Alpine zone of Haleakala on the island of Maui. The silver hairs on the narrow leaves reflect the UV radiation at altitude. The leaves are filled with gel and this gel retains the moisture. the plant blooms once and then dies. It was threatened with extinction due to grazing, the changing habitat, the trampling of the delicate root system and the loss of natural pollinators.
