THULE AIR BASE, Greenland – Days away from the region’s first sunset of the season, light from the nearly setting sun illuminates the top of the air traffic control tower at Thule Air Base, Greenland, Aug. 16, 2022. Because of Thule’s proximity to the North Pole, the region experiences 24 hours of daylight during the summer months. As the daylight period draws to a close in autumn, the sun moves closer to the horizon, producing golden hour light. Located 750 miles north of the Arctic Circle, Thule AB is the Department of Defense’s northernmost installation.
