He commenced railroading as a clerk in 1886 in the generaloffices of the Minneapolis, Lyndale & Minnetonka Ry., of whichhe was appointed paymaster in 1888. This company was laterleased to the Minneapolis Street Railway and Mr. Mackay wasretained in the employ of this company and its successor, the TwinCity Rapid Transit Co., with which he successively occupied thepositions of clerk, bookkeeper, paymaster, chief clerk and assistantauditor. The latter position he resigned in 1897 to accept his pres-. H. C. MACKAY. ent position of comptroller and auditor of the Milwaukee Railway& Light Co. He has been an active member of the Street RailwayAccountants Association since 1898, at which meeting he waselected a member of the executive committee, and his selection tothe presidency is a well Merited recognition of the work he hasdone in this field. At the Chicago convention of the association he read a paper oncar-mileage, in which he showed the unreliability of the car-mileas a unit of comparison and advocated the use of the car-hour forgeneral comparisons. This method of comparison has received theendorsement of the association. CARS DERAILED IN RACINE.
