VII ^ GUAYAQUIL Sanitary Conditions and Prevailing Diseases The City of Guayaquil (Plate iii, page 7) is situated two andone-half degrees south of the equator, on the north bank of theGuayas river, about forty miles from its mouth, and just belowits formation by the junction of the Rio Grande and Daulerivers. The land upon which almost the entire city is situatedis flat, and has an elevation of only a few feet above the levelof the river.
