He playedon the school nine and was captain of the championteams of 1908, and played in 1907-08. Dr. Duffy married, Nov. 20, 1918, Henrietta, daugh-ter of James P. and Elizabeth (Foley) Walsh, of Pitts-burgh, the father for many years vice-president and gen-eral manager of the H. & W. Walker Company. Theyhave one son, Charles Alphonsus, Jr. CHARLES H. GARLICK—Among those of Pitts-burghs citizens who have recently passed, before com-pleting their allotted three-score and ten years, is Charles. BIOGRAPHICAL 333 H. Garlick, efficiency and engineering expert and pub-lic official, who was a native of Mantau, Ohio, but aPennsylvanian by adoption, having been brought hereby his parents when but six years of age. Born in Mantau, Ohio, March 31, 1859, he removedto Tarentum, Pa., with his parents in 1865, and theregrew to manhood, receiving his elementary educationin the schools of that city. One of the pioneers in effi-ciency engineering, he was for seventeen years con-nected with the Atlantic Refining Company. Alwaysinterested in machinery, and possessed of a high degreeof mechanical ability, the value of his work was clearlyrecognized, and in 1911 he was appointed inspector ofstationary steam boilers for Allegheny county, in whichresponsible position he served continuously until 1920,when failing health compelled his retirement.
