Tropical cyclone Harvey over northern Australia on 7th February 2005. A tropical cyclone is a powerful rotating storm system surrounding an area of low pressure. They are known by different names depending on where they form, for instance in the North Atlantic they are called hurricanes. In the southern hemisphere they spiral clockwise, as seen here. They spiral anticlockwise in the northern hemisphere. Tropical cyclones form in summer and autumn when the sea is at its warmest. They bring high winds and heavy rain and can do great damage to built-up areas. Photographed by the MODIS instrument on the Aqua satellite.
