The Black Hawk, Muck-a-tah-mish-o-kah-kaik, chief of the Sac nation.

The Black Hawk, Muck-a-tah-mish-o-kah-kaik, chief of the Sauk or Sac nation. He was dressed in a plain suit of buckskin, with a string of wampum in his ears and on his neck, and held in his hand his medicine-bag, which was the skin of a black hawk, and the tail of which made him a fan. Handcoloured lithograph by J. Harris after a painting by G. Catlin from James Cowles Prichard's Natural History of Man, Balliere, London, 1855.
