Canada and its provinces : a history of the Canadian people and their institutions by one hundred associates . ivilCode of the province resembled conditions under the commonlaw of England. Summing up the labour legislation of Canada, the recordof the Dominion may be described as progressive. In theproducing of machinery for the settlement of trade disputesby compulsory investigation new ground has been brokenand no small reputation acquired. Particularly beneficialhas been legislation of the provinces with regard to child andfemale labour and for the protection of workers in danger-ous and hazardous undertakings. As the Dominion expandsindustrially and the demands of the situation increase, labour, to judge by its achievements, ought not to find itdifficult to secure the protection to which it has provedits claim. It is significant that on several occasions in thepast the Trades and Labour Congress has resolved ratherto secure the enforcement of existing laws than to press forthe enactment of new ones.
