HMTD. Molecular model of the explosive hexamethylene triperoxide diamine (HMTD). This high explosive was first synthesised in 1885 and for many years was used as the main primary explosive in the mining industry. More recently it has become a popular home-made explosive used in suicide bombings. Atoms are represented as spheres and are colour-coded: carbon (grey), hydrogen (white), oxygen (red) and nitrogen (blue).
