And yet the fortswere hardly marred : scarce a dent can be discovered in theiroutlines from this terrific storm of iron. Commodore Barron,when told that we had not lost a man in the engagement, couldhardly credit the statement, having thought that the takingof these forts would cost us thousands of lives, and it wouldhave if the turf could have {)revented shells from droppinginside the walls.
