This statue of Hercules and the Boar is a bronze by Jean de Bologne and is housed in the Louvre in Paris. Hercules (Roman name; Heracles to the Greeks) was a major figure in Greek and Roman mythology. A demi-god, he was the son of Zeus and Alcmene. He is traditionally depicted with a club and the skin of the Nemean lion, which he killed as the first of 12 Labors assigned to him by King Eurystheus. This statue shows Hercules wrestling the Erymanthian Boar, which he must defeat and then carry back, alive, back to the king. This feat was his 4th Labor.
