An Okinawa resident cleans a sacred monolith during the annual cleaning of the Ubu-gah Spring August 10 aboard Marine Corps Air Station Futenma. According to Seiichi Miyagi, a local community leader and former resident of the village, the symbols roughly translate to “spring” and “birth”. Before World War II, the spring was a place where people came to bathe new born babies and pray for their health.
