This plant enjoysa peculiar record inasmuch as it also supplies the 2500-volt,forty-two-cycle Stubaital Railway, opened in 1904 as thefirst of single-phase lines, and the Innsbruck-Hall 1100-volt interurban railway, the first Austrian railway system touse high-tension direct current. As shown in the accompanying map, theeastern line from Innsbruck to Scharnitz, which is 21 mileslong, and the western line from Reutte to Griessen, whichis 20l/2 miles long, pass through Austrian territory. Theintermediate Scharnitz-Garmisch-Partenkirchen-Griessensection, which runs through Bavaria, is about 25 miles long. The Alpine character of the territory is indicated by thefact that on the two Austrian sections there are eighteentunnels with a length of 1412 ft., in addition to manybridges aad viaducts. The difficulties offered by the natureof the ground formed one reason for selecting electric trac- supplies energy to the 600-volt city lines of Innsbruck. The Mittenwald Railway also has a power station of itsown situated about miles to the south of Innsbruck inthe vicinity of the Sill works. This station contains two3000-volt, single
