A trowel or spade isnecessary in getting these groundnests. The nests of birds such as wood-peckers can often be secured withoutmuch difficulty; when these birds nestin fence posts I have often taken thewhole post home, sawed off the sec-tion containing the nest and put therest of the post on the wood pile. Quiteoften some collectors saw a nest holebelow the hole dug out by the birdsto show the bed of the nest and theeggs. This is very satisfactory. Where the nest is small it is wellto place it in your cabinet, as withhummingbirds, vireos, knatcatchersand and some warblers, as nests aregreat dust collectors and should beprotected by the cabinet or a glassshow case when possible.
