Soviet Moon exploration. Cartoon showing a rocket and a crescent Moon forming the hammer and sickle symbol that signifies the Soviet Union (USSR). The Cyrillic form of the USSR (CCCP) is seen on the rocket. During the space race with the USA, the USSR launched several unmanned spacecraft to explore the Moon, achieving several notable firsts. On 12 September 1959, the Soviet spacecraft Luna 2 was the first to reach the lunar surface. It carried Soviet pennants with inscriptions marking this achievement. There were 15 successful Luna missions.
