From this press the bars are transferredto a bulldozer, where they are bent up into U shape in asingle operation. Both the punching and bending up intoU form are accomplished during a single heat. For quenching and hardening, the liars arc pre-heatedin another furnace, and during this operation they are heldin tongues to protect them against warpage. The magnetsarc quenched by hand individually, the workman swing-ing them to and fro in the quenching bath, so as to insureuniform cooling and uniform hardness. After coming out of the oil bath, the magnets arecleansed of oil in sawdust. Next, they are subjected toa preliminary bumping test, in order to show up anypossible cracks or other imperfections. This consists inknocking the magnets together two and two. In anotheroperation in the punch, following the bumping test, thelegs of the magnets are bent in a little in order to pro-. 1âPlain bars of uteri from which mar/net is fot âSemi-circular holes punched, to allow projectionof rotor. 3- Magnet formed in gage for âMagnet formed in gage for hole si:e. 5âMag-net formed in gage tor distance between outsideof poles. 6âMagnet formed in gage for distancebetween inside of poles. 7âFinished magnet vide stock for grinding on the inside. This gives the sur-face to which the bearing holder is fitted, this latter form-ing a part of the magnetic circuit. Next comes the rough grinding of the outside of themagnet. First one side of the U is ground off, to get asurface to work from; then the other side, and finally theends of the legs are ground off square. This completesthe mechanical operations on the magnet.
