The eruption subsides after four or six days,followed by a moderate peeling of the skin, andthe fever abates gradually. Eelapses are not uncommon, but are not sosevere as the original attack. Old people, new-born children and alcoholicsubjects are apt to suffer severely and even to diefrom erysipelas. Cancer of the skin, chronic skin diseases and oldulcers sometimes follow attacks of erysipelas. Treatment.—As a rule, erysipelas will run itscourse and disappear without treatment. Isolatethe patient in a room with good ventilation andsunlight. Dressings and other objects coming incontact with the patient must be burned or dis-infected. 264.
