Morgan's work on chromosomes, genes and heredity led to him being awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (1933) and the Copley Medal (1939). Osterhout worked at the Rockefeller Institute from 1925 to 1933. Her research speciality was cell permeability. In the background between the two is US chemist and future double-Nobel laureate Linus Carl Pauling (1901-1994). Photographed in 1935.
