Among the most grotesque forms were two species ofbat-fish secured from a depth of sixt\ fathoms. One oftiiese {MaJthc sp.) was less than two inches long, with astrong, conical rostral process, which was one-third as long asthe distance from the mouth to the base of the caudal process imparts a most ludicrous expression to the pro-file of the lish, giving a comical resemblance to a human facewith large eyes and an enormous nose.
