Then they had no railroads, no tele-graph lines, and a merchant had to make along, tedious journey to market to supplyhimself with 6 or 12 months supply ofmerchandise ; mails were slow and news-papers were not read as much as they areto-day; people were not as well informed onsubjects in general. Then profits in sellinggoods were very large, and it was not neces-sary that one should be particular about hisexpense account or his profits,
