There should^be a light drawing-board (separate) for the box, to beused with loose canvas or pieces of academy-board. Palette.—This may be of satin-wood, mahogany,4 .74 STUDIO, FIELD, AND GALLERY. walnut, or even of pine. They are usually oval inshape, hut may he square. They vary in length from9 to 18 inches, but should not be less than 13 inches—15 is a very good size. One may be very readily madeof a broad pine shingle that is firm and well give cuts of shapes and proportions. Palette-Knife.—There are two kinds (with regardto shape), the straight and the trowel-shape. The latteris used for impasting.
