The parasitic plant popular at Christmas attaches to and penetrates the branches of the tree through which it absorbs water and nutrients. When mistletoe covers a tree like this it can often result in the death of the tree so harvesting in the winter serves a useful purpose to preserve the tree and the mistleoe itself.
