Mexican Independence Day is held on the 15 and 16 of Sept. and commemorates the Grito de Dolores, a speech given by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a priest in the small town of Dolores Guanajuato who called the people of Mexico to rebel against their Spanish colonial rulers on the morning of Sept 16, 1810. His speech inspired a group of local men to free prisoners held by the Spanish crown in the local jail. His actions ignited the Mexican War of Independence with Spain which lasted over 10 years.
