C3rdAD Temple of Mithras (Mithraeum) beside Carrawburgh Roman fort on Hadrian's Wall. Looking W through the entrance & ante-chapel at the aisled interior of nave & low benches with facsimiles of altars found during excavation at E end. The temple was in use until the early C4th when it was desecrated, probably by Christians (members of a rival eastern mystery religion).
